Congratulations! Contacting your recruiter is the first step toward becoming a Navy Reserve Officer. However, that may have been the easiest step of the entire process.
As you begin this process, please beware that the process is time consuming, challenging and lengthy. If you are up for the challenge, please continue…
One of the most important aspects of a Naval Officer is leadership. Ask yourself “Do I create opportunity or react to it?” A leader creates their opportunities. Please take a moment to reflect on your definition of leadership and qualities of it that are evident in your daily life.

In order to put together a competitive package, leadership characteristics and qualities must be infused throughout. Show the selection board your initiative, what opportunities you have seized. As you put together your package, you must highlight your leadership qualities in everything from the standard application to your motivational statement to your resume.
Contact the individuals you list as references and encourage them to also highlight your leadership ability and ask them to give specific examples. You may want to give them a resume that focuses on these traits.
When preparing for your interview, have a solid definition of leadership and be able to give specific examples to illustrate this from your daily life. These may include volunteer activities, extracurricular activities, organizations you belong to, management positions that you made into leadership positions, etc.
After reading this, if you are nervous but have started making your list – Great! Keep going!
However, if you are unable to think of any leadership examples currently in your life, take a moment and identify what you can do to change this. Change it, and then start this application process again.
Remember,
Leadership is habit more than talent.
