When Am I Obligated?

The great advantage of applying for Naval Officer Programs is that there is no obligation until the very end of the process. After you complete and submit the application, a selection board decides whether or not you should be selected. If you are selected, you have the choice to decline the selection with NO OBLIGATION!

Another advantage of the Navy is when you sign the bottom line, you know exactly what your job will be. Other services can't claim that fact. Also, we have selection boards every month so you don't have to wait six months or longer to find out if you have what it takes.

The Processor:

Once you have been "sold" by your recruiter and are ready to begin the application process, you will become intimately familiar with your processor. Your recruiter has done his/her job and now must move on to the next OTOOLS LEAD, missed phone call, email message etc... The processor will collect all of your paperwork and determine the errors and any missing documents. Just like your recruiter, the processor is overworked so don't bog them down with phone calls. A nice friendly email goes a long way.

Economy:

Given the state of the economy, we are seeing a huge rise in the number of applications. Your recruiter is probably overloaded with applicants at this point so it is imperative that you finish the application materials in the time dictated by your recruiter. If you don't, be prepared to fall to the end of the line.

Another effect of the rise in applications is that the competition of every board is getting stiffer. The earlier you apply, the better off you are. The officer recruiting goal has already dropped 10% for FY09 and we expect further cuts due to the high retention of current officers.

References:

After talking with your recruiter and coming up with a timeline, ensure that you send out the reference requests promptly. Below you will find the editable reference form required from your employers. We need a reference from all your employers from the past 3 years vice your current employer. In addition, it is helpful to have 2-3 recommendations from other prestigious individuals that can speak towards your integrity and character. Recommendations DO NOT have to be on a DD370. Some examples of a good reference are a College Coach, Professor, Pastor, Congressman, High-Ranking Military Officer (O-4 and above)...
